To safeguard communities, we establish local drinking water Ooranis (tanks) equipped with purification systems and form local water governance committees to oversee sustainable, equitable water allocation.
Ensure water security by restoring the water body or building a new one
Enhancing the storage capacity and distributing water:
• Understand the purpose of the water body and estimate water demand to match against the catchment area
• Build a new waterbody or desilt existing water bodies to ensure adequate water storage
• Clean inlet channels and implement silt traps to slow down siltation of the water body in the future
• Strengthen bunds, implement or repair sluice gates or weirs as required at the outlet of the water body
• Implement or renovate draw wells, open wells, or mini water tanks at drinking water oorani's to ease drawing of water for communities. Add a treatment system with chlorination to ensure safe drinking water quality.
Water Governance:
• Form Village Water Sanitation Committees to ensure proper upkeep and usage of Drinking water Ooranis
• Form Farmer's organizations to govern the allocation of irrigation water to different farms from Irrigation tanks and Farm ponds
• Formed Village Water Sanitation Committee (VWSC) in the village
• Provided training on water quality awareness and testing to VWSC and community members
• Assets handed over to Panchayat for regular operations and repairs at own cost
Community ownership:
• Foster community ownership of water resources through video shows, street plays, wall paintings, and events celebrating significant days, e.g., world water day
• Setup a community contribution account in post office ranging from ₹ 20-50 for carrying out minor repairs in the system
